Oka River by Vasily Polenov catches the river at that calm, unhurried point in the day, when the light barely seems to move. A pale sandbar juts out from the tree-covered bank into shallow water streaked blue-green and brown, with a few dark rocks breaking the surface near the middle. On the far side, low hills glow gold and soft green under a sky gone pink and grey, the kind of color that only shows up right before evening. Small white buildings sit tucked at the base of the hills, so far off they almost disappear into the hillside.

Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov (1844–1927) was a Russian landscape painter tied to the Peredvizhniki, a group of realist artists who broke from the formal, staged subjects taught at the Russian Academy in favor of scenes taken straight from life. He painted the Oka River again and again after settling on an estate along its banks, and this kind of open, peaceful stretch of water was clearly one of his favorite views.
