George Frederic Watts (1817–1904) was an English painter known for his portraits of prominent Victorians and his large symbolic works. He was sometimes called "England's Michelangelo" for the range of his output, which included both portraiture and large-scale allegorical paintings, and he painted this portrait of actress Ellen Terry in 1864, the year she briefly left the stage to marry him.
