"Amanitas" Art Print
Amanitas by Gustav Macoun puts two red-capped mushrooms front and center, leaning into each other against a background gone almost black. Their caps are scuffed with white and pale orange, like real weather and dirt have gotten at them, and the pale stems catch the only real light in the painting. A third, smaller mushroom sits apart from the pair, cap still closed. The moss underneath is built from short, choppy strokes of green and brown, laid on thick.
Gustav Macoun (1892–1934) was a Czech landscape painter trained at the Prague Academy under Vlaho Bukovac. He worked close to his subject, often painting forest floors, wildflowers, and undergrowth in thick, physical brushwork rather than distant, tidy views.
