"A Goose" Art Print

A Goose by James Sowerby catches a Canada goose mid-glide across pale, blue-grey water, its black head and neck cutting a hard line against the white cheek patch and pale chest. The folded wings are built from row after row of overlapping brown feathers, each one edged separately, and both webbed feet trail below the surface as it paddles forward. Sowerby leaves most of the paper bare and warm-toned, with just a faint stain of foxing creeping in near the top edge, the kind of small imperfection that gives away the artwork's age.

James Sowerby (1757–1822) was an English naturalist and illustrator best known for his work on English Botany and other major natural history publications of his time. He brought the same exacting, specimen-level accuracy to his animal studies, building up watercolor over a graphite underdrawing rather than working loosely from memory.
