Her red hair is pinned up with pearls, and her blue and gold gown catches the light as she leans forward. Her free hand rests flat against the stone wall, steadying her in that one moment. Behind her, a white building with an arched window rises above the climbing roses.

John William Waterhouse was an English painter born in Rome in 1849, best known for paintings of women drawn from mythology, poetry, and literature by writers such as Tennyson and Keats. He worked with rich fabrics and natural outdoor light, and gave his subjects an inward expression, often turned slightly away from the viewer and caught mid-thought.
