"The Keynote" Art Print
The Keynote by William Merritt Chase shows a woman at the piano from behind, her dark hair pinned up and her blue robe catching the light across her shoulders. Sheet music stands open in front of her, and her hand rests on the keys mid-note, with a faint floral wallpaper filling the wall behind her. Painted from behind, she seems unaware of anyone watching, caught fully in the music instead.
William Merritt Chase was an American painter born in Indiana in 1849, and one of the most influential art teachers of his generation, founding the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art and later the Chase School in New York. He often painted interiors and portraits close to home, and his fast, loose brushwork gave even a simple scene like this one the feeling of something caught in a single glance.
