Swallow and Butterflies by Taguchi Tomoki pairs a diving blue swallow with two butterflies below, one deep green and the other yellow, both dotted with small touches of red. The bird’s long pointed wings give it a wonderfully sharp shape, while the butterflies feel softer and more decorative beneath it. Plenty of open ivory paper separates the three, making each figure feel almost like an individual study. The original Japanese inscription remains along the upper right, preserving the character of the 19th-century woodblock design.

This vintage Japanese artwork comes from Yatsuo no Tsubaki, a design collection by Taguchi Tomoki during the 1860s. The series gathered ornamental motifs inspired by Japanese art and design, including birds, butterflies, plants, animals, and other natural forms. This swallow-and-butterflies design appears in the surviving Yatsuo no Tsubaki collection held by Japan’s National Institute of Japanese Literature.
