Head of the Dog "Bob" by Édouard Manet brings a small terrier's face right up close, built almost entirely from thick, loose strokes of gold, rust, and cream. His eyes catch the light from deep inside a mess of fur, giving him a curious, slightly mischievous look, and his blunt black nose sits low in the middle of it all. Manet painted him the way he painted people, close up and full of character, so a friend's scruffy little dog comes across with just as much personality as anyone else he ever painted.

Manet was born in Paris in 1832 and became a key figure in the move from Realism toward Impressionism, known for portraits and scenes of Parisian life. He worked in loose, visible strokes at a time when polished, careful finish was the standard, and that approach gave even a small dog portrait like this one real character.
