Flower by Sientje Mesdag-van Houten shows a single bloom past its peak, its petals gone soft and grey-white with streaks of pale yellow. The flower hangs sideways from a curved stem, while thin, wiry tendrils curl loosely above it like they've come undone. A single green leaf, painted in solid strokes, anchors the bottom of the page and stands in contrast to the pale, almost see-through washes used for the flower itself.

Sientje Mesdag-van Houten was a Dutch painter known for her flower studies, working almost entirely in watercolor and gouache. Her paintings favor quick, visible brushwork over careful blending, with petals and stems built from just a few loaded strokes rather than fine detail.
