Botanical Study by George Elbert Burr packs several plants onto one page, all sketched in fine pen and ink. A spotted lily leads the way on the left, rising tall above curved, blade-like leaves, its petals covered in small dark speckles. Smaller sprigs of flowers, leaves, and berries branch off across the rest of the sheet, each one built up from hundreds of tiny, deliberate pen strokes. 

George Elbert Burr (1859–1939) was an American printmaker, widely considered one of the finest etchers of the early 20th century. Before he became known for his desert landscapes, he spent years drawing detailed illustrations by hand, including a four-year project sketching jade and bronze artifacts for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
