Primitive Pattern by Albert Racinet is packed with color, geometry and tiny decorative details collected into one maximalist composition. Rows of zigzags, spirals, stripes, floral forms and geometric borders sit alongside larger circular and architectural motifs, moving from earthy reds, ochres and black into unexpected hits of pink, turquoise, yellow and green. 

Albert Racinet (1825–1893) was a French illustrator, engraver and design historian best known for L’Ornement Polychrome, his ambitious visual survey of decorative arts from around the world. Published through Firmin-Didot, where Racinet also worked as an artistic director, the series brought thousands of historical motifs together in meticulously arranged color plates for artists, designers and craftspeople to study. This Primitive pattern appears in the 1888 edition of the work.
