Albert Racine - Chinese Pattern Art Print

Chinese Pattern by Albert Racinet comes from a nineteenth-century study of Chinese decorative design, where individual motifs were gathered together as inspiration for artists and craftspeople. A crane walks through curling blue waves beneath a red sun and stylized clouds, framed by smaller studies of flowers, borders and repeating ornament. The combination feels maximalist, with turquoise, coral, deep blue and green packed into every section of the print.

Albert Racinet (1825–1893) was a French illustrator and design historian best known for L’Ornement Polychrome, his ambitious visual encyclopedia of ornament from around the world. Across its richly colored plates, Racinet documented everything from architecture and textiles to ceramics, decorative borders and motifs, creating a reference library that designers could return to for inspiration. This Chinese pattern was published in the 1888 edition of the work.
